When is the best time to see Fall Foliage in the Catskills?

Catskills foliage begins to peak at the very end of September and typically runs until the last week of October. However, it’s different every year — so keep an eye on this page for the latest intel and photography.

How long does Catskills foliage peak last?

In 2021, it was winding down around the end of October. This year, because of summer weather stresses, it may wind down a little sooner. We’re just waiting to see how it all works out.

2022 Catskills Fall Foliage Week 3: Sep 28-Oct 4

Catskills fall foliage colors are beginning to emerge in earnest. But only just. This weekend could see the start of the fall foliage show for real.

I was up on top of Thomas Cole and Black Dome mountains on Tuesday, September 27 — looking over at Blackhead — and this is what I saw…

It looked to me like about 5% fall foliage, tops! — well below other reports and predictions I’m seeing online.

Catskills Fall Foliage isn’t here yet but it’s on the way!

Next Step: bookmark this page and check back often — I’m out there every week and posting fresh Catskills fall foliage photos right here — and on my Instagram account.

2022 Catskills Fall Foliage Week 2: September 21-27

It’s still early days in the Catskills fall foliage for 2022. On a long hike in the Western Catskills last weekend, I was glad to see the trails were wet and the trees were faring better than during our August drought.

I think the ILOVENY foliage forecast might be getting a little ahead of things, based on what I saw on Dry Brook Ridge…

The yellow is definitely starting but I’m not convinced things will be that yellow this weekend. Then again, it’s never a bad idea to visit the Catskills.

2022 Catskills Fall Foliage Week 1: September 14-20

We’re definitely starting a little earlier this year, due to the drought which has really affected a few species. Recent rains, I hope, will help return fall foliage to a more typical timeline.

As it stands, we have some yellowing but, really, it’s still very early in the change.

Friday this week, I’ll be hiking in The Catskills and will add pics below — so bookmark this page and check back later to see current reports from The Catskills.

Early indications for this year’s New York fall foliage…

Sep 8: What will the hot, dry summer mean for fall foliage? This Times Union article says “low rainfall paired with higher-than-average temperatures this summer may make for a more muted and accelerated leaf-peeping season in the Capital Region.”

Aug 28: There’s no question that the prolonged drought has been stressing our trees here in The Catskills and elsewhere in New York. So far, however, only a few species have succumbed and begun to shed their leaves — most notably the striped maple. This has happened before in times of drought.

The good news is that striped maple is an understory species and is not responsible for most of of the amazing fall foliage colors we see here, every year, in The Catskills.

You’ll be glad to know that our sugar maples and our red maples, not to mention our tremendous oaks, are still in very good shape. And we’ve recently had some rain.

Last Year’s Fall Foliage Catskills Reports…

2021 was a weird year for foliage. At November 15, we still had a few patches of green but the oak leaves were mostly brown and the maple leaves had all fallen. Certainly, the hills were mostly brown by mid-November; the big show was over.

Catskills Fall Foliage Week 8: Oct 27-Nov 2, 2021

“Beautiful peak fall colors will be emerging in the Finger Lakes and throughout portions of the Hudson Valley this weekend, while near-peak and peak colors will arrive on Long Island. Foliage change has been uneven this season and travelers may find that some areas classified as peak and near-peak contain an abundance of green leaves.”

Most Catskill locations are moving from peak to post-peak — but in some locations the show is once again extended.

A rainstorm blew threw and knocked many leaves from the trees. This may be the final week of glorious leaf colors. However, there is also still plenty of green out there. It’s such a weird year.
