Whiteface Mountain by foot—or car!

Hiking Whiteface Mountain is a must-do for avid hikers seeking to explore the Adirondacks. The mountain features several trails that cater to different skill levels, providing various ways to reach the summit and enjoy the panoramic views it offers.

  1. Veterans’ Memorial Highway: For those looking for a less strenuous way to reach the summit, the Veterans’ Memorial Highway allows visitors to drive most of the way up, with a short hike or elevator ride to the summit.
  2. Wilmington Trail: The Wilmington Trail is the most common route for hikers, offering a direct path to the summit. This trail is about 5.2 miles long one way and provides a steady climb with switchbacks through diverse terrain and lush forest.
  3. Marble Mountain Trail: This route makes for slightly shorter mileage. It’s a straight up affair from the SUNY Atmospheric Sciences Research Center. At the summit of Marble Mountain, it connects with the Wilmington Trail which then takes you to the summit of Whiteface Mountain.
  4. Esther Mountain: For a more challenging hike, you can choose to include Esther Mountain in your route, one of the 46 Adirondack High Peaks. This addition adds some distance and elevation but rewards hikers with less trafficked terrain and serene natural settings.
