The DeBruce Lodge
Red Cottage Inc / Western Catskills

Pet Friendly: Yes
When building DeBruce Lodge, the owner focused on simplicity and on nature. The design of this bijou cabin in the woods is blissfully straight-forward, with its single roofline and deep overhang out front, and incorporates stone and wood throughout, reflecting the natural elements of its unspoiled setting. The interior has been meticulously thought through, with spaces allocated to a variety of activities, so there are places for baking bread and breaking bread, lounging and lingering, gathering and reflecting.
The open kitchen is just to the right after entering, and everything you really need is there. Plenty of pine cupboards provide ample storage and there is a dishwasher, so while you might be pretending to lead a rustic life in the woods, in fact you’ll find there are a lot of creature comforts. A generous dining table sits next to a triple window offering a view of the surrounding woodland.
The ceiling shoots skyward in the living room, where the stone fireplace takes center stage. It’s such a work of art that it is a year round attraction. Cozy up and take in a movie; you are here to relax. If reading is more your thing, the rocker is next to a few shelves of books, dive on in. Daylight streams in via the glass slider leading out to the side patio and from the several skylights above.
There are two comfortable bedrooms, a queen, located down the brief corridor off the living room, and two extra-long twin beds up in the loft. In the bathroom, also along the downstairs corridor, rustic has been replaced with sleek. It is fully tiled in slate, with glass shower partition and modern fixtures. There is also a utility closet which has a washer/dryer combo.
If an outdoor shower is your idea of heaven, you will be delighted with the version at DeBruce Lodge (in season). There is also a small patio with a picnic table and a gas bbq grill to enjoy year round.
Much-touted Livingston Manor is only about ten minutes’ drive, and includes delightful shops, eateries and a couple breweries in which to drink some pretty terrific brews and perhaps meet some friendly folks.
*In the winter months, a snow-appropriate car is recommended. All-wheel or 4-wheel drive is ideal.
