Mount Tammany Information

Mount Tammany might just be New Jersey’s most iconic mountain. Towering over the Delaware River at the southern end of the Kittatinny Ridge, its rocky summit provides one of the most breathtaking views in the entire state, straight across the famous Delaware Water Gap into Pennsylvania’s Mount Minsi.

Is Mount Tammany on the Appalachian Trail?

No. Mount Tammany is not part of the Appalachian Trail. However, the Appalachian Trail (AT) runs nearby on the opposite side of the Delaware River, crossing over Mount Minsi in Pennsylvania. From the summit of Tammany, you can actually see Mount Minsi and sections of the AT ridge. The AT, however, does pass along the northern side of Tammany.

Where is Mount Tammany located?

Mount Tammany rises on the New Jersey side of the Delaware Water Gap, within Worthington State Forest. It sits at the southern tip of the Kittatinny Ridge, just off Interstate 80, near the town of Columbia, NJ.

Are there bears in the Delaware Water Gap?

Yes. Black bears are common in the Delaware Water Gap. While they tend to avoid humans, it’s wise to hike with awareness. Keep food secured, don’t leave trash, and give bears a wide berth if you see one. Bear sightings are more common in early morning and late afternoon hours.

Where do you park for Mount Tammany?

Use the Dunnfield Creek parking lot, located just off Interstate 80 East (Exit 1) in New Jersey. This is a very popular trailhead, and the lot fills early—especially on weekends and holidays. Overflow parking is sometimes available nearby, but plan to arrive early or hike midweek to avoid crowds and stress.
