Bonticu Crag Information
Bonticou Crag is one of the most striking and popular features of the Shawangunk Ridge, located in the Mohonk Preserve just outside New Paltz, New York.
Unlike many forested Catskill peaks, Bonticou stands out for its exposed, gleaming white conglomerate cliffs and panoramic views across the Hudson Valley and into the Catskills. The Crag is more of a rocky escarpment than a traditional summit, but its dramatic position at the edge of the ridge gives it an outsized presence in everyone’s mind. It’s so fun.
The Crag rises to about 1,148 feet in elevation, which is not especially high, but its prominence and the sheer drop-off on its eastern face make it feel much taller. From the top, hikers are rewarded with sweeping, unobstructed scenic views and a real sense of drama.
The most memorable way to reach the summit is via the Bonticou Scramble, a short but intense and exhilarating rock scramble that requires using both hands and feet to climb a sketchy boulder field up the face of the Crag. (A much gentler loop trail option is available for those looking to avoid the scramble.)
Bonticou Crag is a classic Shawangunk hike: short, scenic, and rugged, offering a big payoff with minimal mileage. It’s also a popular destination for sunset hikes, photography, and anyone looking to experience the unique geology and topography of the Gunks.
