Mount Greylock Information

Mount Greylock is not only the highest mountain in Massachusetts, its summit is also the closest thing Massachusetts has to a true alpine summit. Rising 3,489 feet above sea level at the northern end of the Taconic Range, Greylock dominates the surrounding landscape in a way few northeastern mountains do. Its broad summit, extensive high-elevation spruce-fir forest, dramatic views, literary history, and rich network of trails have made it one of New England’s most-visited mountain summits for nearly two centuries.

Mount Greylock rises roughly 2,000 feet above the nearby Hoosic Valley and, from many angles, particularly from the south, its long ridge-line resembles a sleeping whale. That distinctive profile famously inspired Herman Melville, who viewed the mountain daily from his home in Pittsfield while writing Moby-Dick. Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau, William Cullen Bryant, and Oliver Wendell Holmes all found inspiration as well. Greylock is perhaps the most literary mountain in New England.

Taconics, Not Berkshires!

Although often grouped with the Berkshires, Mount Greylock actually belongs to the Taconic Mountains, a geologically distinct range stretching through western Massachusetts, eastern New York, and western Vermont. Greylock is the centerpiece of the 11-mile-long Greylock Range, a rugged massif that includes neighboring peaks such as Saddle Ball Mountain and Mount Fitch.

Mount Greylock’s Open Summit

The summit is unlike any other in Massachusetts. At higher elevations, northern hardwood forests give way to a boreal ecosystem more commonly associated with the Catskills High Peaks, northern Vermont, New Hampshire, and Canada. Red spruce and balsam fir crowd the upper slopes.

The views from Greylock are legendary. On a clear day, sightlines can extend more than 70 miles. Hikers can look across the Berkshires, the Green Mountains of Vermont, the Taconic ridges of New York, and the distant hills of southern New Hampshire.

Veterans War Memorial Tower

Standing prominently on the summit is the 93-foot Veterans War Memorial Tower, completed in 1932 and visible from much of the surrounding region. The granite tower serves as both a monument and an observation platform. Nearby sits Bascom Lodge, a rustic stone-and-timber structure built during the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Together with the nearby Thunderbolt Ski Shelter, these historic buildings form the Mount Greylock Summit Historic District and contribute greatly to the mountain’s distinctive character.

Mount Greylock’s Hiking Trails

Greylock’s hiking opportunities are extensive. More than 70 miles of trails wind through Mount Greylock State Reservation, with routes for casual walkers, day hikers, and experienced backpackers. The Appalachian Trail crosses the mountain, making Greylock a milestone destination for both northbound and southbound thru-hikers. Popular ascent routes include the Bellows Pipe Trail, Hopper Trail, Cheshire Harbor Trail, Thunderbolt Trail, and several others. Some routes climb gradually through beautiful hardwood forests, while others tackle the mountain’s steeper slopes more directly.

For many hikers, Greylock occupies a unique place in the Northeast. Sure, it lacks the extreme elevation of Mount Washington, the rugged remoteness of the Adirondack High Peaks, and the extensive alpine zones of northern New England. But it somehow combines elements of all three. Hiking Greylock means long climbs, expansive views, boreal forests, historic structures, and a sense of accomplishment that feels entirely proportional to its status as Massachusetts’ highest peak.
