Years in the making, a new trail to the summit of Cascade Mountain in the Adirondacks is nearing completion.
The new trail will begin at the current Van Hovenberg trailhead, and is being built with sustainable design practices to reduce trail erosion and the need for regular maintenance, and to ease the grade for humans.
In terms of trail infrastructure, development and investment, New York is behind many popular hiking regions, both at home and abroad. So this project is very welcome.
The new route is much longer, at 11 miles round trip, and will mean apx 3,300 feet of elevation gain. which means a bigger commitment for hikers than the current route which is under 5 miles round trip. Will it still be considered the easiest of the Adirondack High Peaks? We’ll have to wait a little longer to find out.
Construction began in 2018 and, right now, it’s about 80% complete. It should open some time in 2024. The existing trail from Route 73 will be decommissioned and returned to Nature.
