After several months of testing, I can confidently say that the Vasque St. Elias hiking boots live up to their reputation as a robust, reliable choice for serious hikers.
Vasque sent me two pairs to test, one pair for me (male) and one pair for a friend (female). Previously, I had purchased and loved a pair of Vasque Breezes which were exceptional. The Breezes were, by far, my favorite hiking boot to date. I got almost 600 miles out of them, which is incredible. So I’m a big believer in Vasque’s high-quality construction and long-term durability.
The St. Elias boots have proven themselves across the months in various terrains and weather conditions, showcasing their durability, comfort, and overall performance.
Vasque St. Elias Boot Review
The Vasque St. Elias hiking boots are a solid choice for hikers who prioritize durability, comfort, and stability.
“These are my new favorite hiking boots. They are much more comfortable and less constricting than most boots I’ve worn, but they are also sturdy enough to provide good support, safety and traction for technical hiking. My feet don’t ache after a hike anymore. I’ve also never received compliments on hiking boots before now; many people have commented ‘I love your boots!’ and that they want a pair.” — Kristen
Comfort and Fit
From the moment you put them on, the St. Elias boots offer immediate comfort. This is largely due to the dual-density EVA midsole, which provides excellent cushioning and energy return with each step. The boots fit well, particularly around the ankle, offering substantial support, which is crucial for long hikes with heavy loads. The padded collar adds to the comfort: you get a snug fit that keeps your foot secure without causing any pressure points.
Traction and Stability
The St. Elias boots feature the Vibram® Megagrip outsole, known for its exceptional traction. On dry trails, these hiking boots perform admirably, gripping rock slabs and loose gravel with ease. The low-profile lug pattern enhances grip on a variety of surfaces, making these boots reliable on everything from forest trails to rock slab to scree slopes.
Durability and Construction
One of the standout features of the Vasque St. Elias boots is their build quality. Made from full-grain leather with a GORE-TEX® waterproof lining, these boots are built for the long haul. The leather is not only durable but also resistant to water, and the GORE-TEX lining ensures your feet stay dry in wet conditions. During my testing, the boots maintained their waterproof integrity, even in ankle-deep water crossings. The minimal stitching reduces the risk of water seeping in through seams, which is a significant advantage for maintaining waterproofness over time.

Weight
At 2 lbs. 14 oz., the St. Elias boots are not the lightest on the market, but their heft is justified by the protection and stability they offer. The weight provides a sense of security, especially when navigating rough terrain or carrying a heavy pack. While some may find them a bit heavy for shorter, less demanding hikes, the added stability and durability make them a worthwhile trade-off for more challenging adventures.
Design and Aesthetics
The Vasque St. Elias boots have a classic, rugged look that will appeal to traditional hikers. The all-metal lacing hardware is not only durable but also allows for a customizable fit, especially around the ankle. The upper three sets of lacing hooks enable a secure, personalized fit that enhances comfort and support on the trail. The color and design are understated but attractive, making them a versatile choice for various outdoor settings. We found that the brown leather version was particularly prone to generating compliments on the trail.
Conclusion
The Vasque St. Elias boots are particularly well-suited for long, demanding hikes in rugged terrain where carrying a heavy load is necessary. While they may not be the lightest option, their build quality and performance make them a reliable companion for any serious outdoor enthusiast.
If you’re looking for a boot that can handle tough conditions while keeping your feet comfortable and dry, the St. Elias is well worth considering.
