We hikers love our PB&J’s, of course, but a super tasty (and slightly healthier) alternative is an AB&N
PB&J sandwiches are still great! But an Almond Butter & Nutella sandwich packs far more sustaining calories and, with much less sodium, it’s even a little healthier.
It’s also just nice to have a solid alternative in your rotation.
Here’s the recipe / science showdown…
PB&J
- 1 Slice Pepperidge Farm Hearty White
- 1 Tbsp Peanut Butter
- 2 Tsp Jelly
This works out at 260 calories, with 9 grams of fat, 300 mg of sodium, 38 grams of carbs (including 14 grams of sugar), and 8 grams of protein.
AB&N
- 1 Slice Pepperidge Farm Hearty White
- 1 Tbsp Almond Butter
- 1 Tbsp Nutella
This works out at 340 calories, with 16 grams of fat, 240 mg sodium, 40 grams of carbs (including 15 grams of sugar), and 9 grams of protein.
Verdict
More calories, more fat, more protein, less sodium, more flavor, more energy!
Definitely worth checking this out for your next hike.
Pro-tip: no matter which sandwich you pack, lightly toasting the bread helps it stay good in your pack for hours.
