An easy, delightful lollipop route.
Poets’ Walk near Rhinebeck, New York, is an enchanting park and loop trail, a serene landscape that has inspired poets and artists for centuries.
Welcome to Poets’ Walk, near Rhinebeck and Red Hook in Dutchess County, a scenic sanctuary nestled along the majestic Hudson River. As you meander along its winding paths, bordered by lush woods and sweeping river vistas, you’ll find yourself walking in the footsteps of literary giants who once sought solace and inspiration here.
Poets’ Walk is more than just a trail; it’s a tribute to the romantic era of literature, where nature was the muse for timeless poetry and art. In 1849, the Astors and the Delanos commissioned German-born landscape gardener Hans Jacob Ehlers to improve the grounds. Ehlers constructed a woodland path in honor of Washington Irving and Fitz-Greene Halleck who are said to have strolled there.
The park’s design, with its hidden benches, rustic summerhouses, and open meadows, evokes a sense of tranquility and contemplation. The path is an unfolding poem, written by the landscape itself.
The trail’s gentle undulations lead you through varied scenes: from quiet, wooded nooks to open fields that stretch towards the Hudson River, with views of the Catskills High Peaks, each portion offering its own unique and peaceful moment.
Whether you’re a lover of poetry, a seeker of peace, or simply a wanderer in love with the beauty of the natural world, Poets’ Walk awaits to offer you its inspirations.
